Mr Peter Sagar met legendary pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy for lunch last Thursday and then heard him conduct Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto and 4th Symphony with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House a day later.
Mr Sagar cited the event on facebook: …” I was very fortunate to be able to spend an hour with Vladimir Ashkenazy on Thursday along with 6 or so others. Thank you to my very good friends at Theme and Variations Piano Services for the opportunity!” (www.themeandvariations.com.au)
To give a very short description of Vladimir Ashkenazy: He is a world famous pianist and conductor, born in Russia. Ashkenazy has performed and recorded a wide range of piano repertoire, both solo works and concerti from Bach, Shostakovich, Beethoven, Chopin, Scriabin and many more. He performed with all the major world orchestras and conductors and has worked with world class musicians such as violinists Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman.
Wikipedia mentions, that in public performances, Ashkenazy was known for rejecting a tie and button shirt in favor of a white turtleneck; and for running (not walking) onstage and offstage to the piano. At the age of 78, he still does this today. He also performs and records chamber music.
