Having a quiet and soft voice can often lead to one finding themself in delicate situations. Confident speakers tend to talk over people with soft voices, often interrupting them. This can go as far as people with soft voices feeling that what they have to say is of little to no value.
It is a well accepted fact that singing exercises train your vocal range and power, but have you ever considered the benefits that singing training can have on your speaking voice? Singing can give you a speaking voice to die for! Teachers, real estate agents and telemarketers alike, they all depend on a well-functioning speaking voice as well as clear diction in their jobs.
People who are considered to be soft-spoken not only need to train their voice, but their inner-ear as well, in order to become accustomed to the new and more powerful voice coming from their mouth. This is due to their new-found voice initially seeming “too loud” to them; and although friends and family will be quick to encourage the use of this “new voice”, for the soft-speaker it can present itself as quite a dilemma. Training the inner-ear to get used to one’s changing speaking-volume is the first step to successfully acquiring a confident voice.
Try to develop an imagination for speaking through your breast-bone instead of your mouth. Imagine your mouth is not part of your face, but instead that it is speaking directly from your chest – or go even further by imagining that you are speaking directly from the heart. This is what singers do - they connect their body to their voice, thus reshaping their relationship with their speaking organ and implementing it as an instrument.
Much like physical exercise, the more you train, the stronger your body grows and the same goes for your voice. Imagine a stronger body and maybe add a bit of a bold personality to go along with it – projecting your voice from one far end of the room to the other. Imagination is the key when it comes to projecting your voice.
Finally, don’t forget: sing a song every day. Develop your speaking voice with singing and you will be surprised about the impact it can have on your life! There is no doubt that a better use of your voice will improve your confidence, letting other hear what you have to say!
